Acne and Pigmentation

Acne and pigmentation have many causes, from hormones and genetics to sun exposure and inflammation. Cosmetic treatments can help some patients, but they are not a substitute for medical diagnosis. Where a medical cause is suspected, we will recommend assessment by a dermatologist or your doctor.

How the options differ

Acne programmes combine in-clinic treatments with a home routine to reduce congestion and inflammation. Pigmentation treatments depend on the type of pigment: melasma, sun damage and post-inflammatory marks each respond differently, and some can worsen with the wrong approach.

Your consultation

We look at the pattern, history and triggers of your concern, previous treatments and your current routine. You may be asked to start a preparatory skincare routine before in-clinic treatment.

Preparation

  • Bring a list of products and medications you use, including prescriptions.
  • Strict sun protection for at least two weeks before treatment.

Aftercare

  • Follow the home routine agreed with your practitioner.
  • Daily SPF is essential to protect results.

Safety

  • Melasma can be aggravated by heat and some lasers; treatment is chosen carefully.
  • Patients taking isotretinoin need medical clearance before most procedures.

Frequently asked questions

Can pigmentation be removed permanently?

Many types of pigmentation can be improved, but some, such as melasma, tend to recur and need ongoing maintenance and sun protection.
